Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Managing Medication - Medicines in the UK

At the end of this session you will:

  • have explored the definition of a medicine and the term 'drug'
  • have considered how the pharmaceutical industry undertake clinical trials with medicines
  • have an understanding of Homeopathy and how complementary medicines are registered
  • have knowledge of how medicines have a generic name and a brand/proprietary name
  • have an understanding of the importance of checking labels thoroughly before administering medicine/tablets
  • have knowledge of the three different classifications of medicines in the UK
  • have looked at how medication should be recorded on a MAR sheet and what information is recorded
  • have considered the legal requirement for particular information to appear on the dispensing label
The learning objectives in this session link in to the following units:
  • Care Certificate:
    • 5.5 Support individuals to minimise pain or discomfort:
      • 5.5c - Take appropriate action where there is pain or discomfort. This could include: Re-positioning, Reporting to a more senior member of staff, Giving prescribed pain relief medication, Equipment or medical devices are working properly or in the correct position e.g. wheelchairs, prosthetics, catheter tubes
    • 13.5 Understand medication and healthcare tasks:
      • 13.5a - Describe the agreed ways of working in relation to medication
      • 13.5c - List the tasks relating to medication and health care procedures that they are not allowed to carry out until they are competent


  • Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care:
    • Optional Units:
      • DEM 305 - Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach


  • Level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma (including Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability Pathways):
    • Group B - Optional Context/Specialist Knowledge Units:
      • DEM 305 - Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach
    • Group C - Optional Competence Units:
      • HSC 3047 - Support use of medication in social care settings


  • Level 3 Award Awareness of Dementia:
    • Mandatory Units:
      • DEM 305 - Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach


  • Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care:
    • Optional Units:

      • HSC 3047 - Support use of medication in social care settings
