Objectives

Group Learning Session: An Introduction to Working Positively with People at Risk of Suicide and Those Bereaved through Suicide

At the end of this session the candidates will:

  • Understand the importance of seeking the advice, input and support of those with the specialist skills, knowledge and appropriate qualifications for working with people who are at risk of suicide.
  • Know when, how and why they should work closely with the specialist services and other professionals who have expertise and a formal role in advising on how to protect someone from attempting suicide.
  • Be aware of relevant national and local policies and procedures about managing the risks and addressing the needs of those who are at risk of suicide.
  • Know the specialist counselling and support services available to the bereaved relatives and friends of people who have ended their own lives.
  • Know that where there is threat of suicide it should always be taken seriously and not be minimised or ignored. (Understand that any threat of suicide carries a serious risk regardless as to whether someone has attempted to carry out such a threat in the past or not).
  • Know that self-harm and attempted suicide, though self-inflicted, are nevertheless forms of abuse and that some people at risk of suicide may also pose a danger to others.
  • Understand and identify their responsibilities and limitations when working with someone who is at risk of suicide. (This includes being honest when they feel out of their depth and seeking appropriate advice and support from a supervisor or specialist in this field.)
  • Have gained an overview of the topics covered and identified any further personal learning needs and skills gaps in relation to the topics covered.
