Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Young Carers

At the end of this session you will:

  • Know how young carers are defined
  • Know why statistics related to the incidence of young carers differ
  • Be able to explain, in the context of their own work and/or learning needs, how young carers can be identified and supported
  • Know that it is important to be proactive in identifying young carers and the reasons why some young carers do not easily disclose that they have this role
  • Know and understand the background to the relevant legislation and young carers legal rights
  • Be able to explain the importance of having a person-centred multi-disciplinary approach to supporting young carers and those to whom they are providing care and support
  • Understand the importance of providing and supporting advocacy
  • Know the national and local resources which they and young carers can use to enhance the quality of the support and information they need
