Objectives

Individual Learning Session: How Adults Learn

At the end of this session you will:

  • be aware of lessons from research relating to ’adult learning’
  • be aware of how to create a good climate for adult learning
  • have identified your own ‘learning style’
  • have considered what the implications are of teaching adults with different learning styles
  • understand the different methods/techniques which can be used to enable adults to learn
The learning objectives in this session link in to the following units:
  • Care Certificate:
    • 2.1 Agree a personal development plan:
      • 2.1a - Identify sources of support for their own learning and development
    • 2.2 Develop their knowledge, skills and understanding:
      • 2.2c - Describe how a learning activity has improved their own knowledge, skills and understanding
      • 2.2g - List the learning opportunities available to them and how they can use them to improve the way they work
    • 3.3 Deal with Comments and complaints:
      • 3.3c - Explain the importance of learning from comments and complaints to improve the quality of service


  • Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings:
    • Group B - optional:
      • Intro OP 1.1 - Understand the importance of engagement in leisure and social activities in health and social care


  • Level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma (including Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability Pathways):
    • Group C - Optional Competence Units:
      • HSC 2006 - Support participation in learning and development activities


  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities:
    • Optional Units – Group B:
      • HSC 3004 - Facilitate learning and development activities to meet individual needs and preferences
