Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Carers and Young Carers and the Law in Scotland

At the end of this session you will:

  • Have an overview of legislation and policy relevant to carers in Scotland. (This will include knowing about the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 as well as the relevant legislation which preceded it.)
  • Be able to explain the legal rights of carers in Scotland.
  • Know the definition of adult carers and young carers under the Carers (Scotland) Act.
  • Be aware of local, regional and national resources to support carers.
  • Understand the outcomes-focused nature of supporting carers and the need to take a personalised approach to their support.
  • Be able to explain some of the dynamics of supporting carers and those to whom they provide support.
  • Be able to explain the importance of working in partnership with carers, those they support and to recognise the expertise they gain through experience.
  • Have had the opportunity to identify further learning needs and skills gaps in relation to the topics covered and explored how these can be addressed.
