Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Advocacy

At the end of this session you will:

  • Know the difference between the types of advocates involved in assisting people who use health and social care services and can explain their specific purposes.
  • Understand that some people who use health and social care services have a legal right to an independent advocate and know key pieces of legislation which give people this right.
  • Be able to recognise the situations in which individuals have a right to an independent advocate and know how to enable them to gain access to the correct advocacy service.
  • Explain the key principles upon which independent advocacy is based.
  • Have a good understanding of a range of relevant advocacy services available to the people they assist.
  • Have had the opportunity to identify further learning needs and skills gaps in relation to the topics covered and explored how these can be addressed.
